The empty wall above your counter is your best cabinet
Rails, shallow shelves and magnetic strips turn the backsplash into storage and give your counter back.
In a small kitchen the counter fills up first. The wall above it usually stays empty.
Start with one rail
A single rail with S-hooks holds utensils, mugs and small baskets. Mount it about 45 cm above the counter so it clears the kettle and the toaster.
Add a shallow shelf
Keep it 15 cm deep. That’s enough for jars and spices, and shallow enough that you won’t hit your head when you lean over the counter.
Use a magnetic strip for knives
It frees up a whole knife block worth of counter space.
Renting?
Look for rails that stick on with adhesive strips, or use a tension pole between the counter and the upper cabinet.
